Regina Heheina at the Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) Australian Research Network Conference

Australia Awards Vanuatu alumna Regina Heheina, a pharmacist from the Northern Provincial Hospital under Vanuatu’s Ministry of Health, recently represented Vanuatu at the Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) Australian Research Network Conference, held from 6–7 November 2025 at the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR). Supported by Australia Awards, Regina joined leading clinicians, researchers, and scientists to explore emerging evidence on NTM infections—an increasingly complex global health challenge.

The conference provided a comprehensive overview of NTM epidemiology, diagnostics, host susceptibility, radiological and laboratory advances, disease management, and research-based therapeutic innovations. Sessions also showcased clinical trials and research studies examining microbiology, diagnostics, host-pathogen interactions, and novel therapies. Regina noted that these discussions deepened her understanding of NTM’s evolving structure and the current limitations in treatment, as many therapies remain in trial phases.

A significant highlight of Regina’s participation was the opportunity to reconnect with Dr Amy Legg, a former Australian Youth Ambassador for Development who previously served at Northern Provincial Hospital. Their discussions strengthened professional ties and enabled knowledge exchange on pharmacy practice developments both in Australia and Vanuatu. Regina also engaged with UQCCR’s Dr Chris Coulter regarding reference testing for the Pacific region, including recent drug-resistance confirmation testing relevant to Vanuatu’s TB program.

Beyond conference sessions, Regina undertook a valuable observational visit to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Pharmacy. There, she was introduced to advanced digital pharmacy practices, including robotic dispensing systems, and explored clinical procedures in high-demand settings such as the ICU. These experiences broadened her insights into pharmacy leadership, antimicrobial stewardship, and the application of evidence-based treatment protocols.

Regina emphasised that the knowledge and networks gained during the conference will significantly shape her professional development. She intends to further investigate NTM within her own clinical setting, strengthen research collaborations, and support her team in implementing cost-effective and evidence-based antimicrobial treatments. She expressed deep gratitude to Australia Awards Vanuatu for enabling her participation, noting that the opportunity has empowered her to contribute more confidently to clinical research and leadership in Vanuatu’s health sector.

Through support from Australia Awards, Regina’s experience illustrates the program’s ongoing commitment to building specialist health capacity in Vanuatu and enhancing regional collaboration for improved healthcare outcomes.
