Linda Mahina

Posted in Alumni Profiles

Introducing our newly appointed Alumni Committee members.

Intrigued by numbers and accounting, Linda is an Australia Awards graduate who first completed an Advanced Certificate in Accounting in 1993 at TAFE NSW, followed by a Diploma in Accounting in 2002 at the University of the South Pacific’s Laucala Campus, Fiji.

Linda now works as an accountant with the Vanuatu Utilities Infrastructure (VUI). VUI is the utility provider, owned by Pernix Group Inc., that supplies water and electricity to the Luganville and neighboring areas. With her experience and qualifications, Linda currently looks after a team of four who are dedicated to receivables, payables, and human resources. Linda superintends the usual accounting processes such as financial month-end reports, financial statements, and reconciliations. Ensuring that all the statutory deadlines such as VAT returns, quarterly and yearly reports are met.

Linda confirms that a psychology component studied within her accounting studies has informed her leadership approach, assisting her to oversee a team of diverse people. Having to collaborate with a variety of people who hold different views on regular matters is a challenge Linda is able to confidently perform, and she is very appreciative of being exposed to other ways and perspectives gained throughout her studies in Australia. Enabling Linda to responsibly take up a leading role at VUI.

Linda’s advice to young people in pursuit of accounting qualifications is to commit themselves fully, as the accounting field requires a deep knowledge and understanding of the relevant principles, as well as having a passion for the subject, being proactive and well organised.

Linda works daily by the saying “every cent counts” and is very cautious to guarantee transparency and accountability. As a professional who has been working in the accounting field for over 25 years, Linda further explains “if you love it, you will certainly enjoy the daily routine“.
