Selection Process

There are several steps before a candidate is recommended to receive an Australia Award Scholarship. This is important to make sure the selection process is open, transparent and defensible and to identify the best candidates. These will be candidates who meet all eligibility requirements and who are most likely to make valuable contributions to Vanuatu's development when they return.

Shortlisting
Applicants will be assessed and shortlisted against the following criteria:

  • academic competence;
  • professional and personal leadership attributes; and
  • potential to contribute to development in Vanuatu.

Applicants who best met eligibility requirements and demonstrate clear, realistic development contributions to Vanuatu from their studies, are shortlisted. The number of shortlisted candidates depends on the scholarships available.

Interview
Shortlisted applicants are interviewed by a panel chaired by a senior Australian Government officer. The interview panel recommends candidates who best met the selection criteria and demonstrate good, realistic ideas to contribute to development in Vanuatu. The number recommended for Australia Awards depends on the quality of the candidates and the number of Awards available. Recommended candidates must be approved by a DFAT delegate.

Australia Award Offer
Candidates approved by the DFAT delegate are made provisional offers of Australia Awards Scholarships. Before these are confirmed, recipients must:

  • meet all university entry requirements
  • have confirmed places at universities in Australia or a Pacific location
  • meet all visa requirements, including health requirements.
